Meet Jose Herrera – Export Manager (LAX), as we celebrate 25 years of dedicated service and friendship, helping shape CFI into the leader it is today. From humble beginnings to managing critical export operations, he’s seen it all—and still brings the same energy daily.

How did your journey at CFI begin?

My brother-in-law referred me. Back then, CFI felt like a small, tight-knit operation—a bit of a mom-and-pop shop with a few hundred employees and a handful of U.S. locations. It’s grown tremendously in the last twenty-five years and I’m proud to have played a part in building out our LAX export operations.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No two days are exactly alike, but the rhythm is steady:

  • Start by reviewing emails from overnight and early morning.
  • Check in with my team to ensure all shipments are on track.
  • Follow up with customers and carriers.
  • Handle any warehouse, airline, or driver issues that come up.
  • Make sure operations are handled professionally.
  • Tackle management tasks and keep things moving smoothly.

In logistics, the little details make the big picture work.

How has CFI changed over the years?

The change has been incredible. We’ve gone from a regional player to a recognized leader in perishables forwarding worldwide. Helping grow that side of the business—especially at LAX—has been one of my proudest contributions.

What’s the best part of your job?

It’s the people—especially those who still show up every day with passion, even after all these years. That energy is what keeps me going.

What do people often misunderstand about your work?

The [amount of] time, effort, and commitment it takes. This job demands a sharp mindset and a support system—your family has to understand the pace and unpredictability, too.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in logistics or perishables?

  • Be ready to move fast—perishables don’t wait.
  • Think on your feet.
  • Learn to retain details quickly.
  • Don’t expect to know everything in year one. I’ve been here for over two decades and still ask questions.
  • Patience and persistence pay off.

Any life lessons learned along the way?

Play as hard as you work. It’s all about balance.

What do you do in your spare time?

I spend time with my family, friends, loved ones, and pets. I love to travel when I can. Big sports fan here—Dodgers and Lakers all day, but… Go Bills!
